The string or an array with strings to replace. If this parameter is a string and the pattern parameter is an array, all patterns will be replaced by that string. If both pattern and replacement parameters are arrays, each pattern will be replaced by the replacement counterpart. If there are fewer elements in the replacement array than in the pattern array, any extra patterns will be replaced by an empty string.

Women with sensitive skin may have a very difficult time finding a way to shave comfortably and avoid nicks, cuts and ingrown hairs. Shaving is a personal choice and some women prefer to shave below the knee and some will shave the entire leg, the other areas of the body which a woman may shave include the bikini line, armpits and arms. With a few basic tips and the right equipment, it is possible for a woman to shave her body and not have to deal with the dry skin, itching, irritation bumps and other uncomfortable side effects that can occur from shaving.

Tools Needed for Shaving

A woman should always avoid sharing razors with others in order to prevent the spread of infections or diseases. The tools a woman uses for shaving will depend on which part of the body is going to be shaved. Basic tools include a razor, which can be a disposable or have a replacement blade or an electric razor, shaving lotion, gel or cream and warm water which is used to soften the skin and hair before shaving.
If the area of the body to be shaved has longer hair, it may be a good idea to have scissors, hair conditioner, tweezers, baby oil or lotion, an electric trimmer and petroleum jelly. When selecting a razor, it is important that a woman searches for a good quality blade, not the cheapest. It is never recommended that a woman never uses a straight razor to shave body hair, it could result in ingrown hairs, razor burn or deep cuts which could require stitching.

The Basics of Female Shaving

One of the most basic and important shaving tips for women, how to avoid irritation, ingrown hairs and nicks is the liberal use of warm water. Warm water moistens the skin and allows the hairs to become softer and more pliable, making it much easier to get a closer, cleaner shave. Shaving naturally exfoliates the skin and if the razor becomes clogged with hair and dead skin, the woman is at a greater risk of cuts, nicks and irritation, so using plenty of warm water and frequent rinsing is of the utmost importance.

Some women prefer using shaving cream or lotion when shaving, but this is a needless expense when soap works just as well. Other women can get the same effect when shaving by simply purchasing a men's formulated shaving cream and can save money. Shaving cream, lotions and gels are thought to provide protection against cuts and nicks, but if a lady is careful when shaving by going slowly and paying attention these things can be avoided.

A woman should also experiment with different types of razor blades until she finds the one that works best for her skin. There are several different types of razors available, some are disposable, others have twin or triple blades and some have lubrication strips which can replace the need to use shaving cream. Sampling different types and varieties will allow a woman to find the one she most prefers and it is just as important to replace blades or razors on a regular basis to get the closest shave possible and to reduce the risk of cuts.

How to Shave Properly

The best way to get a close smooth shave and to say goodbye to nicks, cuts, scrapes and razor burn is to start with good quality equipment. A sharp blade on a razor is the most important thing a woman needs when trying to get the best shave possible. The following steps below outline things a woman should do when shaving:

* Wash the skin to be shaved with warm water and soap, which will soften hairs
* Wet the body part with hot water and wait for a few minutes
* Apply a thin, even layer of shaving cream or soap lather and allow a few minutes for it to penetrate the hair
* To avoid razor burn it is important to make sure the blade of the razor is sharp and begin by shaving in the direction of hair growth
* Pay attention to the contours of the armpits and kneecaps to avoid nicks and cuts
* Be observant about the amount of debris in the razor and rinse frequently to prevent clogging
* Once done shaving, rinse the area with warm water and pat dry gently with a soft towel and apply a lidocaine gel, cornstarch powder or baby oil in order to prevent chafing and burning of the freshly shaved skin

It is hard to put a price on history, but it turns out the last vestiges of the Champ Car World Series were worth about $1.2 million.

Most of the assets of the defunct series sold at auction June 3, as organizers liquidated an extensive catalog of pace cars, racing equipment, transporters and other memorabilia.

Champ Car filed for bankruptcy March 5 after agreeing to merge with the Indy Racing League. The cash from the auction will be used to pay an extensive list of creditors. Will Power won Champ Car's last-ever race, at Long Beach in April.

Car transporters were big-ticket items, with one selling for $92,000 to Newman Wachs Racing. The team plans to use it for Atlantic Series and vintage racing duties. Several other trailers each sold for more than $55,000.

Pace cars also drew extensive interest, led by a 1996 Dodge Viper and 2006 Ford Mustang. Each sold for $37,000. A wide range of other cars sold for between $5,000 and $29,000.

Barring a sunrise at night, General Motors Corp. is headed for an orderly bankruptcy, and the Obama administration is about to be handed the keys to a venerable corporate institution. Again.

And again, the administration seems to be rewriting the rules of capitalism to fashion a deal to its liking.

Purists - and virtually every academic economist one happens to encounter - wonder what happened to the once inviolate principle of rewarding risk-takers. Unsecured creditors will get less of a stake in the new GM than its employees, and you can forget about poor unadorned stockholders.

As in the deal with Chyrsler's bondholders, the administration muscled its way through the negotiations and used its considerable leverage to convince secured debtholders - the highest class of investors - to accept a fixed return that was significantly less than many of those investors had expected when they put money into the falling company. Who benefits? The question isn't very apt, because everyone is losing something. But, on balance, the unions are getting a better deal.

The unions, who support Democrats - and whose work rules arguably hastened the collapse of the American auto industry.

Asked whether the Chrysler and GM bailouts were sops to unions at the expense of secured creditors, administration officials answer the subject of the question. That may be the case, they respond, but the other choices were untenable. As to the charge that the Obama economic team is redefining capitalism, erasing incentives for investors and acting like a gangster, I would wage an hour's worth of UAW productivity that officials, in private moments, would concede that these things are so. But they'd argue that, where critics see a contempt for capitalism, what's actually taking place is a revision of the informal rules that governed capitalism into the ground. A cultural revolution, if you will.

It is absolutely true that there are exigent circumstances; that the domino effect of two major auto company failures would cascade into a catastrophe even greater than the one we've experienced. At the same time, though, the Obama team is pushing a policy outcome that will advance Mr. Obama's economic worldview, one which treats the era of money capitalism, and all of its rules, as suspect.

No matter what you call it, leading experts say the virus that is scaring the world is pretty much all pig. So while the U.S. government and now the World Health Organization are taking the swine out of "swine flu," the experts who track the genetic heritage of the virus say this: If it is genetically mostly porcine and its parents are pig viruses, it smells like swine flu to them.

Six of the eight genetic segments of this virus strain are purely swine flu and the other two segments are bird and human, but have lived in swine for the past decade, says Dr. Raul Rabadan, a professor of computational biology at Columbia University.

A preliminary analysis shows that the closest genetic parents are swine flu strains from North America and Eurasia, Rabadan wrote in a scientific posting in a European surveillance network.

Google Becomes Default Location Provider For Firefox

Many of us have been saying it for a long time: location based services are the future. But up until now they've been a distant, hazy future, because they've been so difficult to use. That's going to change soon, and it looks like Google is going to be leading the way.

Google has just announced that it has become the default location provider service in Firefox, which means beginning in the latest Firefox Beta (available here) users will be able to update their location from their web browser without having to install an extra plugins or programs through Google. This is big.

Location based services take a lot of flack for their privacy issues, but so far the biggest obstacle in their acceptance has been that they're a huge pain to use, typically requiring extra browser plugins and annoying sign-up processes. The new version of Firefox is probably going to change that, at least for desktop browsers, because it will have location detection baked in. Up until now it seemed like Mozilla was going to be using Geode, a plugin it first annouced back in October, as its default location provider.

Just as an unsustainable financial system caused the current banking crisis, the intensive farming of animals is at the heart of the swine flu pandemic

In modern disaster management theory, when any large system experiences a major shock or failure, you assess the risk, activate an ordered emergency response, and manage the after-effects. In the world of real people hit directly by the real shock, you look for someone to blame.

For ordinary Mexicans this week, who faced the shutdown of their country by swine flu and an unknown number of deaths, it was a culprit that was needed.

The Fred Goodwin of the epidemic was easy to identify in their eyes. Just five miles from the town of La Gloria, which appears to be the epicentre of the flu outbreak, is a giant industrial pig complex jointly owned by the world's largest pig processor, Smithfield Foods.

Smithfield is adamant that the swine flu is not of its making and has no connection to its factory farms in Mexico or in any of the countries where it has established its powerful presence. By the end of the week, the company had, like a besieged banker, gone into shutdown mode and declined to give interviews, but it issued a statement: "We have found no evidence of the presence of influenza virus in any of our pig herds or any of our employees at any of our worldwide operations. All our herds are tested regularly for disease including influenza. We routinely administer flu vaccines to protect them and conduct monthly tests to examine the presence and identity of different flu strains."

When a young boy from La Gloria who had been ill in March became the earliest confirmed case of the current swine flu outbreak, following new tests by the US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) on previously cleared samples from Mexico, Smithfield said it too was re-examining its herds. It was confident that it could reassure people who have been "bombarded by unfounded opinions, non-scientific statements and unrestrained internet rumour and speculation" that it was not the source. It declined to answer the Guardian's detailed questions on its tests. The results were not due till this weekend. Like the rest of the world watching a pandemic unfold as though in a slow-motion car crash, Smithfield could do little but wait to see how hard or soft the landing would be.

• Hong Kong The first case of swine flu in Asia was confirmed by the Hong Kong government today as the virus continued to spread around the globe. The government's chief executive, Donald Tsang, said a Mexican citizen, who flew into the territory on Thursday, had been isolated in hospital after developing a fever. Police officers wearing masks and gloves guarded the hotel where he had been staying. It will be quarantined for a week and all the guests are being treated with the antiviral drug Tamiflu.

• Germany Germany's centre for disease control confirmed the first case of human-to-human transmission of the H1N1 virus. A 42-year-old Bavarian nurse was infected after coming into contact with one of the three people who have swine flu in Germany. The health ministry said she had made a full recovery. Authorities in Landshut, north of Munich, said the nurse was infected while working with a 37-year-old man who had recently travelled to Mexico.

• Egypt The government's decision to order the slaughter of all pigs in response to the threat of swine flu was condemned by international health experts. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation's chief veterinary officer, Joseph Domenech, described the cull of 300,000-400,000 pigs as "a real mistake". There has not been a single suspected case of the H1N1 virus in Egypt.

• New Zealand Catholic and Maori leaders issued advice as a fourth person in the country was confirmed as having swine flu. The Roman Catholic church told priests not to place communion wafers on worshippers' tongues or to allow them to share communion wine from a single chalice during mass because it could spread germs. Maori politician Rahui Katene urged a temporary halt to the hongi, a traditional greeting where two people press their noses and foreheads together and exchange breath, the New Zealand Herald reported.

THE number of British cases of swine flu increased to 13 last night, as it was confirmed that two people have contracted the disease in the UK.
Graeme Pacitti, 24, of Falkirk, tested positive for the virus after coming into contact with his football team-mate Iain Askham, who fell ill following his honeymoon in Mexico.

And last night doctors confirmed a 42-year-old man from Gloucestershire had also contracted swine flu within the UK.

Until now, all incidents of swine flu in Britain have been among people who have travelled to infected areas. The new confirmed cases are the first sign that the virus is being transmitted in the UK.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says there are more than 300 confirmed cases of the virus globally. In the UK, tests are continuing on at least 642 suspected cases.

A 12-year-old girl from south Gloucestershire, a woman from Merseyside and an individual in south-east England were confirmed as sufferers yesterday.

The schoolgirl was on the same flight from Mexico as Mr Askham and his wife, Dawn. She is not thought to have had any contact with the 42-year-old man from the same area.

Mr Pacitti, a clerical assistant in the NHS, said he was "disappointed" at the news of a positive test. He said he met Mr Askham last Thursday and started to show symptoms on Saturday.

He has been in his flat since he was contacted by a doctor and tested.

The Scottish health secretary, Nicola Sturgeon, said the latest development was "significant and concerning". But she added: "It doesn't mean there's more reason for people to worry.

"We're still very much in the containment phase of this infection. We're trying to stop it spreading. It's significant because it represents the first case in the UK of person-to-person transmission of this virus."

Ms Sturgeon said people who had come into contact with the Askhams or Mr Pacitti were advised to seek medical attention only if they displayed symptoms. She insisted there was no evidence that swine flu was out in the wider community.

Dr Harry Burns, Scotland's chief medical officer, said: "I am not surprised at this development, as we have seen person-to-person transmission being reported in other countries, like North America."

Ms Sturgeon said a further 29 people in Scotland remained under investigation as possible cases of swine flu. Since the previous day, 11 people were cleared after tests, but a similar number of new cases had emerged.

Human-to-human transmission of swine flu has been confirmed in the United States, Canada, Spain and Germany.

Professor Hugh Pennington, a leading microbiologist based in Aberdeen, said the first sign of the virus spreading within the UK was not surprising.

"The big issue now is are there people out there who are incubating the virus, or have got it now and haven't come to light? They could be spreading it on.

We will only find out when we start to see a rise in the number of cases of flu. Most people when they get these mild symptoms wouldn't probably go and see a doctor," he said.

Ms Sturgeon met key groups, including business leaders and opposition politicians, yesterday to discuss the swine flu situation. She said these meetings would now be held every week.
