Manchester United vs FC Barcelona Analysis

Champions League: Manchester United v FC Barcelona - everybody's dream Finale

It certainly should have been a rematch of last year's Champions League final. Instead, Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo decided it would be a rematch of one of last year's semifinal clash between Manchester United and FC Barcelona.

Manchester United progressed to the Champions League final in Rome after convincingly beating Arsenal 4-1 on aggregate. The Red Devils had to wait 24 hours after triumphing at the Emirates to know who will be their opponents come May 27 at the Stadio Olimpico. And with all the controversy one could ever think of, it was revealed to be Pep Guardiola's Catalan Giants Barcelona FC, after the Blaugrana controversially ousted Guus Hiddink's Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona clashing against Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Champions League was something that everyone was dreaming about.

This clash will see Cristiano Ronaldo coming up against Lionel Messi and experienced manager Sir Alex Ferguson against debutant Pep Guardiola in his first year as coach of a senior side.

How Manchester United reached the final of Champions League.

A goalless draw against Spanish side Villareal in front of their own fans was all Manchester United could manage when they started the defense of their UEFA Champions League title.

With only 10 points from a possible 18 - as a result of 4 draws and only 2 wins in the group stage - Manchester United knew they had done just enough to claim the top spot in their table as they progressed to the next round of the competition. Alex Ferguson was well aware that there was room for a lot of improvement and his side came up strong just when it was really needed.

Manchester United overcame the curse that had struck every other Champions League titleholders since 2006 - the miserable fate of failing to reach the quarter-finals as defending champions. Manchester United saw out Inter Milan in the last 16 of the tournament with a 2-0 home and aggregate victory in the return leg.

They advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and were paired against FC Porto in what football analysts described as the kindest draw of this round.

But in a way or manner, Manchester United made things difficult for themselves by managing a disappointing 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. The second leg therefore presented itself as do-or-die mission for the Red Devils as history revealed that no English club had ever beaten FC Porto at the Estadio do Dragao.

But the World Champions travelled to Porto with the daring wish of re-writing history by triumphing in Portugal. It took Cristiano Ronaldo's 40-yard wonder strike to fire the Red Devils through to the semi-finals of the Champions League: the talismanic number 7 and Portugal captain had stood up against his own countrymen and rivals of former club Sporting Lisbon to break Porto's record.

It was a different affair though against Arsenal. If a 1-0 victory in the first leg at Old Trafford never seemed enough for Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo's wonderful form at The Emirates put the game beyond any challenge.

A brace from the World Player of the Year proved more than enough to seal Manchester United's 4-1 crushing victory over the Gunners to reach their second consecutive Champions League final.

How Barcelona reached the Champions League final

Barcelona affirmed their superiority against opponents Sporting Lisbon, Shaktar Doniesk and FC Basel in the group stages by recording 5 wins out of 6 games and 18 goals in all.

The Blaugrana comfortably qualified to the last 16 stages in Europe where they eventually faced French Champions Lyon. It was a real hurdle to surmount for the Lyonnais who have failed to cross the last 16 phase time and time again. Barca overhauled them with a 6-3 aggregate victory despite drawing 1-1 in France in the first leg. The Catalans marched on to the quarter-finals of the competition to meet Beckenbauer's Bayern Munich. The Germans proved to be no match for the rampant Blaugrana who advanced to the semis after trashing their opponents 4-0 at the Camp Nou and 5-1 overall.

A semifinal tie against Chelsea stood as Barcelona's greatest challenge. The 2006 Champions League winners were held goalless at home by a negative and physical Chelsea side. They entered Stamford Bridge knowing that a score draw will do for them. After 92 minutes filled with controversy and marked by Michael Essien's 25-yard thunderbolt, Barcelona's hopes of reaching the final was more than at stake. But Iniesta's exceptional strike from distance in the last minute of the game robbed Chelsea from reaching another Champions League final in two years.

Pep Guardiola's men face another English side in the final in the name of the English, European and World Champions Manchester United.

Chances and casualties

Barcelona and Manchester United are two clubs from two different countries with a completely different culture all together. However, history shows that as much as they have dissimilarities, they also have similarities - which give this UEFA Champions League final a real flavor of glamour and style…

Pep Guardiola v Sir Alex Ferguson

This will be a battle between the young and the old, the inexperienced one and the wise one, the great warrior and the new combatant.

Barcelona's 38-year-old coach Pep Guardiola is the new ‘kid' on the block. The former Barcelona captain jumped a big step from being the manager of the club's reserve team to coaching the senior side at a time when the Catalans were desperately searching for some fire in the pot. Guardiola certainly surprised the world as he transformed a demoralized and broken Barcelona into a strong army ready to tear down every opponent without mercy with their attacking forces - considered to be the best in Europe and in the world at the moment.

On the other hand, Alex Ferguson, 67, is Europe's most experienced manager after winning everything possible with Manchester United. Last year, the Red Devils beat Barcelona - managed by Frank Rikjaard at the time - as they marched unto the final where the ultimately beat Chelsea to clinch the trophy in style. Ferguson has been with the Red Devils for more than 20 years now, but his desire to achieve success and break records has pushed him all the way to yet an impressive campaign this season as well. It surely would be a curious battle against Coach Pep Guardiola who is also aiming to have his name written down in history as another man to win the Champions League both as a player and a coach. Ferguson will certainly need to be very cunning to stop Barcelona's flow.

The Old Scot led his team to an unprecedented treble back in 1999 as he led Manchester United to Champions League glory at the Camp Nou. Can he repeat history, ten years after this unforgettable achievement?

Lionel Messi v Cristiano Ronaldo

Barcelona v Manchester United is definitely a clash that will determine who the best player is between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi this term. This hot debate has long been running but it might come to an end on May 27, when Europe's two best clubs affront each other in Rome.

Lionel Messi has shown his best form for Barcelona this year in all competition, netting over 35 times with the season yet to be ended. The Argentine playmaker came second best behind Ronaldo in most of last year's award contests and this was certainly due by his inability to steer Barcelona into last season's Champions League final in Moscow at the expense of Manchester United. Lionel Messi's Barcelona rather suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat on aggregate against the Red Devils in a tie where almost all the critics fell on Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese winger had missed a glorious chance from the penalty spot at the Camp Nou which put negative Manchester United in quite a tough position to reach the final. But if Ronaldo flopped in a real nightmare for him at the Camp Nou, it is also a true fact that his enormous frustration pushed the whole Manchester United squad to over-prepare themselves ahead of the return leg which they subsequently won in dramatic fashion.

Cristiano Ronaldo may want to revenge himself by another stunning performance at the Stadio Olimpico. The reigning UEFA Top Scorer has four goals to his credits in Europe this season - half of Messi's tally this time around. He might not get his hand on another European golden boot, but perhaps on a more prestigious trophy which is the European Cup.

Reunion and omissions

French striker Thierry Henri should get the opportunity to renew his rivalry against Manchester United when Barcelona take on the Red Devils in Rome. The former Arsenal captain didn't start in any of the legs against the Mancunians last year, but his presence as a substitute explained that Henri could have trampled Manchester United down had he got more playing time.

Meanwhile, former Manchester United player Gerrard Pique might also get another start in Barcelona's squad. The defender - guilty of a clear handball in the penalty area against Chelsea in the semis - relished the prospect of meeting Manchester United even before Barca played against the Blues at the Bridge.

"I would like to thank United for the support they gave me," Pique told The Sun.

"I will always carry United in my heart. To play them in the final would be perfect.

"I had great friends in Manchester. I played with many world-class players and became good friends with Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic and Nani."

Three people who are completely ruled out of this tantalizing final are Dani Alves, and red carded Abidal and Fletcher. Alves picked up another yellow card in the second leg against Chelsea and was lucky to escape a red card as he made plenty physical challenges on the Chelsea players and on Malouda especially. As for Abidal, a wrong decision from Tom Henning Ovrebo ended his Champions League adventure with Barcelona this season. The same thing happened to Fletcher after he fouled Fabregas inside the box in Manchester United's 3-1 away win to Arsenal. Manchester United didn't succeed in appealing on the Scottish's red card. This trio is therefore out for good.

Captain Puyol should return in defense for the Blaugrana, though. The Barcelona veteran was suspended from playing in London after receiving another yellow card at the Camp Nou. His presence could be vital; Manchester United may need some extra forces to turn the experienced full-back into a miserable joke.

The Stadio Olimpico factor

Manchester United might dress in their white away outfit on May 27, and if this could come as a disadvantage in a way or another for the Red Devils, AS Roma's ground could offer them some much needed luck.

Manchester United lost 2-1 (with Paul Scholes seeing red) at the Stadio Olimpico two years ago but a stunning 7-1 thrashing of AS Roma in the return leg brushed out the defeat. Man United then travelled to this venue again last season and managed a comfortable and memorable 2-0 victory, spiced up with Cristiano Ronaldo's outstanding performance and bullet header.

The World Player of the Year will hope that Manchester United conquer Barcelona to triumph once again at the Stadio Olimpico in Italy.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Signs that a flu epidemic in Mexico is abating mean many companies may escape with only slightly stunted sales.

The Mexican government says the worst of the epidemic has passed and experts say the virus might be no more severe than normal flu.

The government last week ordered all but the most essential economic activities halted until May 5 in a bid to stem the infection.

However, if the country quickly goes back to business as usual, the sales dips seen by companies recently should quickly be ironed out, analysts say.

Supermarkets and some other companies may benefit slightly from panic buying, but "it's much easier to find losers than winners," said Gonzalo Fernandez, an analyst at Santander.

The flu outbreak has savaged the tourism industry, which accounts for roughly 8 percent of Mexico's economy and is already suffering from a high-profile war between the government and violent drug gangs.

The European Union, the United States and Canada have advised their citizens against nonessential travel to Mexico.

Asur, which manages the airport at the popular Cancun beach resort, has almost certainly suffered along with its competitors as foreign tourists cancel vacations. Continued...

17 of 200 Oregon flu tests are confirmed swine flu H1N1

After testing hundreds of suspected swine flu cases, Oregon health officials said that ordinary seasonal flu and common cold viruses are causing most of flu-like symptoms that are sending patients to the doctor.

In the 200 samples processed as of Monday afternoon, 17 have tested positive for swine-origin H1N1 influenza. Seasonal flu was the cause of illness in 59 cases, and the rest were caused by other viruses that routinely cause upper respiratory symptoms.

"There are a lot of people who are ill with respiratory viruses here in Oregon that are not swine flu," said Dr. Mel Kohn, Oregon's public health director. But because the new virus's potential to cause disease remains unknown, Kohn said state health officials aren't downgrading their alertness or guidance on school closures.

"We don't yet have enough experience to be really comfortable," Kohn said.

Multnomah County has six of the confirmed cases, Lane and Polk counties each have four cases, Washington County has two, and Umatilla County has one. Four of the cases are children, four are teenagers, and nine are adults.

Two cases required hospital care over the weekend. One was released and the other remained in a hospital Monday but was recovering, Kohn said. No further cases have been hospitalized.

The jump from three laboratory-confirmed cases on Sunday to 17 on Monday came about because of a boost in the ability to test samples, not a surge in illness. Oregon's public health laboratory on Saturday obtained the supplies needed to test cases locally rather then send samples to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Kohn said the Oregon laboratory completed testing on all suspected cases and can process new samples the same day they come in.

State officials are putting a priority on testing only patients with severe flu-like symptoms. "We are not recommending that doctors test every patient who comes in with influenza-like illness," Kohn said. Treatment remains the same whether its swine flu or seasonal flu. Health officials are focusing testing on severe cases to track whether the virus is becoming resistant to anti-viral drugs or becoming more dangerous.

Kohn and other infectious disease experts continue to stress the importance of personal measures to avoid infection: covering coughs and sneezes (with something other than hands), washing hands frequently, and staying home when sick.

World Heath Organization: 1,025 swine flu H1N1 cases confirmed worldwide

GENEVA -- As the number of confirmed human cases of swine flu rose to 1,025 in 20 countries Monday, the U.N. health agency urged governments to refrain from taking rash but unproven measures to contain the disease.

The World Health Organization's top official said countries should base their actions on scientific evidence, pointedly refraining from criticizing any specific steps governments have taken in response to the outbreak.

"Let me make a strong plea to countries to refrain from introducing measures that are economically and socially disruptive, yet have no scientific justification and bring no clear public health benefit," Margaret Chan said in a video message to the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

China has angered Mexico by quarantining more than 70 Mexican travelers even though some appeared not to be at risk of the disease. On Monday, the University of Montreal said a group of 25 Canadian university students and a professor had been quarantined at a hotel in China since the weekend over swine flu fears. Both countries have reported dozens of cases and Beijing's drastic measures appeared to be an attempt to stop the disease reaching its shores.

Chinese authorities said they have also tracked down and quarantined other passengers who were on the same flight as a Mexican traveler later diagnosed in Hong Kong with swine flu. None showed symptoms of the virus. Hong Kong -- which has its own semi-autonomous administration -- has quarantined some 274 guests and employees of the hotel where the tourist stayed.

WHO flu chief Keiji Fukuda said quarantines were a "long-established principle" that makes sense in the early phases of an infectious disease outbreak. The WHO has yet to declare a full outbreak -- or phase 6 alert -- though it has said this would likely only be a matter of time as the virus appears to be spreading to more and more countries around the world.

"As we get later on into phase 6 then these sorts of measures will become less useful because there will just be more infections around and you can't quarantine everyone in the world," he said.

"I don't want to comment on the specific disease control actions of different countries," he added after being pressed on China's quarantine measures.

Like most international organizations, WHO generally avoids open fights with its 193 member states, preferring behind-the-scenes persuasion. Critics contend that Chan's public restraint could undermine efforts to protect global health, but her defenders say she would never hesitate to do what is necessary.

While the WHO put the number of confirmed cases at 1,025 in 20 countries, the Associated Press, based also on reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and government officials, puts the number of confirmed cases at 1,223 in 21 countries.

No OT: Celtics top Bulls 109-99 to win Game 7

BOSTON - After a record-setting seven overtimes in the first six games, the Celtics made an early night of it with a dominating stretch in the second. That's second quarter, not second OT. Ray Allen followed his 51-point Game 6 performance with 23 on Saturday night, Paul Pierce added 20 and Boston pulled away from Chicago just before the half to finish the Bulls off 109-99 - a rare regulation victory in what might have been be the best first-round playoff series in NBA history.

The Celtics will play Orlando in the Eastern Conference semifinals starting Monday. The seventh-seeded Bulls return to Chicago knowing they took the defending NBA champions to the limit - and quite often beyond.

Ben Gordon scored 33 for Chicago and Kirk Hinrich scored 14 of his 16 in the fourth quarter to help Chicago cut it to three points - thanks in part to a bizarre scoring change that added a point to the Bulls' score two quarters after a first-half 3-pointer was mistakenly ruled a 2.

But Boston made all 11 of its free throws in the last 2 minutes to hold on and keep its drive for an 18th NBA title alive.

Kendrick Perkins had 13 rebounds, Rajon Rondo had 11 assists and Eddie House scored 16 points - going 5-for-5 from the floor, including four 3-pointers.

After three consecutive overtime games, the series went from Odyssey to oddity when an unusual scoring correction helped the Bulls cut the deficit to three points in the fourth quarter.

With 5:44 left in regulation, the public address announcer said that a "technical error" in the first half had credited Gordon with a 2-pointer instead of a 3-pointer. Officials can use video replay to check whether a shot is from beyond the arc or not, but it is supposed to come at the first break after the basket - not two quarters later.

The change made the Celtics' lead 89-84, then Gordon hit a pair of free throws. Perkins followed with a layup and then traded free throws with Gordon before Eddie House hit a 3-pointer to make it 96-88 with 2:30 left.

The Celtics made 11 straight free throws from there - one of them on a three-point play by Allen that made it 105-97 with 37 seconds left.

Chicago led by as many as nine points, 32-23, after Gordon scored the first five points of the second quarter - giving him 17 at that point. The Bulls took a 36-30 lead with 8:01 left in the half before Boston scored the next 11 points and 20 of the next 22 to go into the break with a 14-point lead.

Chicago had eight turnovers and missed four free throws during the stretch.

Pakistan: Swat Taliban patrols strain peace deal

ISLAMABAD - Taliban fighters have resumed armed patrols in the Swat Valley's main town, an official said Sunday, further imperiling a peace deal with the government that imposes Islamic law there and in surrounding areas.

The government has ordered a curfew for the entire valley from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., added Khushal Khan, a top Swat administrator, and officials were discussing what to do if the militants violate the order.

Already Sunday, Pakistan's army accused the Taliban fighters of "gross violation" of the peace pact, blaming them for several acts of violence over the weekend in Swat, including the blasting of a bridge.

On top of that list, two security personnel were discovered with their throats slit and their bodies and faces mutilated Sunday in Swat, a security official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media on the record.

The army's accusations came as the northwest province's government said it was fulfilling its end of the peace deal by establishing an Islamic appellate court for the area, though a cleric mediating the pact rejected the panel.

The carrot and stick approach has underscored the divisions and ambivalence in Pakistan's government over how best to tackle the spreading militancy. It is a topic that will come up when Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari meets with President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai during a visit to Washington later this week.

The Taliban spokesman in Swat could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Taliban hold heavy sway over Swat after some two years of fighting with the army and other security forces.

The peace deal reached with them in February was aimed at fulfilling their demands for an Islamic justice system in the hope they would stop their bloody campaign.

But critics including the U.S. have cast the deal as a surrender. The region is near Afghanistan, prompting U.S. concern that the peace pact has created a haven for militants who can threaten its forces across the border.

Spain leads Europe in swine flu cases with 40 | H1N1

MEXICO CITY - Swine flu extended its reach through Europe and Latin America, with at least five countries reporting new cases on Sunday. Health experts were investigating a case of the virus jumping from a person to pigs, trying to determine if the disease was reaching a new stage.

Hong Kong kept 350 people under quarantine in a hotel as a precaution even though no new swine flu infections appeared in Asia, and Egypt's attempt to kill all pigs as a precaution against the disease prompted pig owners to clash with police who were helping to seize their animals for slaughter.

So far the swine flu epidemic has killed 19 in people in Mexico and one toddler in the U.S. and has spread to 18 countries worldwide - but experts believe the actual spread is much wider.

Mexico's health secretary said 11 people were suspected to have died from the virus in the previous 24 hours. The alarming news came after the epidemic's toll in Mexico appeared to have been leveling off.

The global caseload was nearing 800 and growing - the vast majority in Mexico, the U.S. and Canada. Colombia on Sunday reported South America's first confirmed case of swine flu a day after Costa Rica reported the first in Central America.

The Spanish Health Ministry said the country now has 40 confirmed cases of swine flu - making it the European nation hardest hit by the virus. It said most of the victims have already recovered. All but two had recently visited Mexico.

Britain, Italy and Germany also reported new cases.

But just over a week into the outbreak, the virus largely remains an unpredictable mystery.

Hong Kong - which was criticized for delaying quarantine measures during the SARS outbreak - sealed the downtown Metropark Hotel, where a sickened Mexican tourist had stayed, trapping 350 guests and employees inside.

About a half dozen police officers wearing masks guarded the hotel Sunday, even though all those at the hotel were reported to be healthy. One guest said he walked on the stairs for exercise and to alleviate boredom.

"It's highly inconvenient. That's what's affecting people, because it took us by surprise," said 45-year-old Kevin Ireland, who was on a business trip from New Delhi, India.

Scientists warn that the virus could mutate into a deadlier form.

"Influenza is unpredictable," said Dr. Tim Uyeki, an epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who has worked on SARS and H5N1 bird flu outbreaks. "There are so many unanswered questions. This is a brand new virus. There's so much we don't know about the human infectious with this virus."

Right now, one of the biggest hurdles is a lack of information from Mexico. A team of international and Mexican virus sleuths is trying to piece together an epidemiological picture of who's dying and where transmission began, while also uncovering just how it's attacking people with severe illness. But details are emerging slowly.

Late Saturday, Mexico's confirmed swine flu cases jumped by about 25 to 473, including the 19 deaths. A Mexican toddler also died in Texas days ago, for a worldwide total of 20.

President Barack Obama urged caution.

"This is a new strain of the flu virus, and because we haven't developed an immunity to it, it has more potential to cause us harm," Obama said. Later, he spoke with Mexican President Felipe Calderon to share information.

Pablo Kuri, a Mexican epidemiologist, said three of the dead were children: a 9-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. Four were older than 60. The other nine were between 21 and 39 - unusual ages for people to die from flu because they tend to have stronger immune systems.

Although most of the dead were from the Mexico City area, they came from different neighborhoods in the metropolis of 20 million, and there were no similarities linking their medical backgrounds.

One theory for the deaths is that perhaps they sought treatment too late - falling sick an average of seven days before seeing a doctor. Many of the sick around the world were people who had visited Mexico, including 13 of Britain's 16 cases.

The World Health Organization earlier announced that a pandemic was imminent, but it has decided against declaring a full pandemic alert. Still, that doesn't mean people can relax, said Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO's global alert and response director.

"These viruses mutate, these viruses change, these viruses can further reassort with other genetic material, with other viruses," he said. "So it would be imprudent at this point to take too much reassurance" from the small number of deaths.

In the Canadian province of Alberta, health and agriculture officials said about 220 pigs on a farm were quarantined after being infected by a worker who had recently returned from Mexico. They stressed that swine viruses are common in pigs, and there was no need for consumers to stop eating pork as long as it's handled properly and cooked thoroughly.

The pigs are all recovering in the first documented case of the H1N1 human flu being passed to another species.

In Egypt, police fired shots in the air and tear gas at pig owners who stoned them in an attempt to prevent government workers from slaughtering their animals as a precaution against swine flu. A security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said 12 people were injured in the Manshiyet Nasr slum.

In Baghdad, Iraqi officials killed three wild boars at Baghdad's zoo because of swine flu fears, even though health experts say the virus is not transmitted by pigs. Iraq has no documented cases of swine flu.

Farmers fear pigs may get swine flu H1N1 from people

KANSAS CITY (Reuters) - Humans have it. Pigs don't. At least not yet, and U.S. pork producers are doing everything they can to make sure that the new H1N1 virus, known around the world as the "swine flu," stays out of their herds.

"That is the biggest concern, that your herd could somehow contract this illness from an infected person," said Kansas hog farmer Ron Suther, who is banning visitors from his sow barns and requiring maintenance workers, delivery men and other strangers to report on recent travels and any illness before they step foot on his property.

"If a person is sick, we don't want you coming anywhere on the farm," Suther said.

Those sentiments were echoed by producers around the nation this week as fears of a possible global flu pandemic grew, with more than 200 people sickened, including more than 100 in the United States, and at least 177 dead, all but one in Mexico.

"There is no evidence of this new strain being in our pig populations in the United States. And our concern very much is we don't want a sick human to come into our barns and transmit this new virus to our pigs," said National Pork Producers chief veterinarian Jennifer Greiner.

"If humans give it to pigs, we don't have things like Tamiflu for pigs. We don't have antivirals. We have no treatment other than to give them aspirin," said Greiner.

The World Health Organisation on Thursday officially declared it would stop calling the new strain of flu "swine flu," because no pigs in any country have been determined to have the illness and the origination of the strain has not been determined.

The never-before-seen H1N1 flu virus has elements of swine, avian and human varieties.

PIGS BEHIND SECURITY FENCES

Still, U.S. hog farmers said flu fears have hit them hard in the wallet as hog prices plummeted this week in response. Many countries reacted to the outbreak earlier this week by banning pork or meat from U.S. states that have human cases of the flu. And Egypt ordered the slaughter of all pigs in the country as a precaution.

U.S. hog producers have already been struggling financially for more than a year due to poor prices and high feed costs. If the new flu strain does hit their herds, it could spur further price declines, and could potentially spread broadly through herds.

To try to protect against such a scenario, industry groups and veterinarians this week warned farmers to step up their biosafety protocols, keeping pigs in barns behind security fences with access by any outsiders extremely limited.

Purdue University veterinarian Sandy Amass said farmers should keep an eye on pigs for "coughing, runny nose, fever and a reduction in feed intake," and to have the animals tested immediately if they exhibit such flu symptoms.

"Pigs get flu just like people get flu," Amass said. "We're want to do everything possible so the pigs don't get infected."

For Carroll, Iowa, producer Craig Rowles that means if any of his workers feel sick, they are ordered to take time off work -- paid -- to keep them away from the pigs.

"It's a real issue," Rowles said. "If the pigs get it, there isn't much we can do. Water, aspirin, and bed rest, that's all we've got."

Formula One can live without Ferrari, says Mosley Formula 1

LONDON (Reuters) - Formula One could live without Ferrari if they were to walk away in protest at the introduction of a budget cap, according to International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Max Mosley.

In an interview published in Saturday's Financial Times, Mosley said that he was locked in a power struggle that he intended to win.

He made clear that he would not be backing down over allowing teams to compete with a voluntary 40 million pound ($59.56 million) cap in 2010 in exchange for greater technical freedom than others remaining with unrestricted budgets.

The move, described by Mosley as "by far the biggest development in my time in the sport", has been welcomed by potential new entries as well as independent teams pitted against big-spending manufacturers.

However, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo wrote to Mosley this week warning against creating a two-tier Formula One that could be "fundamentally unfair and perhaps even biased."

London: Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez hopes of ending their 19-year wait for a league championship rest's on Manchester United's opponents.

He believes that even if they let him down, the rest of the Premier League will have to get used to Liverpool being a genuine force again.

Benitez knows Liverpool must win four of their remaining fixtures and hope United slip up, as Sir Alex Ferguson's side is three points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand, The Telegraph reports

"If you want to pick some games, you would say the Manchester derby is difficult, Arsenal at home is difficult and Hull away on the last day will not be easy, as we saw last week. We have to keep winning our games and maybe we will have a chance.

"But just winning is not the most important thing. It is important to be there at the end of the season so you have a chance of winning and it is very positive for the club that we are in that position,' Benitez said.

"Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa will all be in the fight next year, too, but we are confident we will be contenders," he added.

Daniel Agger, the Danish international central defender, is likely to be part of that struggle after Benitez revealed his long-awaited new contract could be signed in a matter of days.
